Tissue Parent Reels for Converters — Jumbo Roll Sourcing from Türkiye
Parent reel decisions are made on the converting line, not in the procurement office. A reel can be inside specification on paper and still be unusable: the wrong deckle for the existing slitting plan, a core the mandrel will not accept, tension build that varies across the reel, more splices than the line can absorb, or a furnish that will not form correctly at the speeds the machine actually runs.
This desk coordinates tissue parent reel sourcing through producers in Türkiye for tissue converters. It is a sourcing and export coordination function. It does not operate a paper mill, does not hold reel stock and does not issue mill certificates. Every specification is matched to a specific producer and confirmed against that producer's capability before a commercial offer is made.
The specification a converter needs to send
Deckle or reel width, and the slit plan it must yield. Note the usable width and any trim you cannot absorb.
Core diameter (commonly 76 mm or 150 mm) and the maximum outside reel diameter your unwind accepts.
Furnish: 100% virgin wood pulp, mixed or recycled. Furnish choice, not GSM, is usually the largest single driver of both price and converting behaviour.
Grammage per ply and ply configuration, with tolerance. Kitchen towel and hand towel grades are heavier and behave differently in embossing.
Performance: machine and cross-direction tensile, wet strength for kitchen and hand towel grades, absorbency, brightness. Softness is a handfeel judgement — request samples rather than reducing it to a number.
Winding and splices: roll build uniformity, maximum splice count per reel, splice tape type and position, and whether flagged splices are acceptable.
Two points are often missed. Moisture content and reel wrapping matter more than they look: reels that arrive with moisture variation cause curl and tension faults on the rewinder. And rapid-dissolving toilet tissue grades, increasingly specified where sewer-blockage regulation is tightening, should be tied to an agreed disintegration test method and pass criteria, not to a marketing claim.
Where a Turkish-origin programme makes sense
Türkiye has a substantial tissue production base and its own converting industry, so producers understand converting requirements rather than treating parent reels as a bulk commodity. Three buyer situations suit this route well.
European and UK converters seeking a documentable second source. Turkish-origin industrial goods in free circulation enter the EU duty-free under the EU–Türkiye Customs Union with an A.TR certificate, and road and short-sea routes give transit measured in days. For a converter carrying working capital against a long sea pipeline, the shorter pipeline is a real cost offset. UK-bound goods require correct origin documentation.
Converters in the Gulf, North Africa, the Levant and West Africa, where Turkish ports offer competitive routing and a wider spread of reel formats than local supply.
Buyers with a non-standard requirement: an unusual deckle, a specific furnish mix, a rapid-dissolving grade, a lighter or heavier ply than the mainstream range, or interim volume while a primary mill is down or re-tooling.
The honest counter-argument: European converters are surrounded by capable domestic and Nordic supply, and on price per tonne a Turkish reel will not always win. Where it wins is on fit, route, documentation and willingness to run a specification a large mill will not schedule. If price per tonne is your only variable, say so at enquiry stage — we would rather tell you the route does not suit you than run a long qualification exercise in the wrong direction.
Qualification: what to request before you commit a line
A lot sheet for the proposed grade: furnish, grammage per ply, caliper, tensile, brightness, moisture, core and diameter.
Short reels or a trial reel set in the specified deckle. A parent reel cannot be evaluated from flat samples.
A trial at production speed with your intended slit plan, recording break rates, splice behaviour, tension faults and finished-roll specification.
A statement of how the producer will hold the specification stable across repeat deliveries, and what data accompanies each reel.
For certified-fibre requirements, the applicable chain-of-custody certificate, checked for the specific grade and producing site rather than the producer's name.
Logistics notes for parent reels
Parent reels are heavy, moisture-sensitive and unforgiving of poor packing. Loading configuration — on-end versus horizontal, dunnage, reel wedging and moisture barrier protection — materially affects the condition of the reels on arrival and is agreed before shipment. FOB, CFR, CIF and DAP structures can all be assessed; DDP only where destination import arrangements and responsibilities can be established in writing. Where a buyer requires reel protection to a specific standard, that must be stated at quotation stage, because it changes the packing specification and the freight calculation.
Frequently asked procurement questions
What is the minimum order for tissue parent reels?
There is no single published minimum, because the binding constraint is the producer's economic run length against your deckle and furnish. Trial reel sets are usually handled separately from commercial volume. Send your trial quantity and expected monthly tonnage and the response will state the real position.
Can you supply parent reels for my specific machine deckle?
Deckle is one of the first things we check. Send the deckle, the slit plan it must yield, the core diameter and the maximum outside diameter. Where a producer cannot run the width, we will say so rather than propose a reel your line cannot use efficiently.
Do you supply recycled and virgin furnish grades?
Both grades are reviewed, and mixed furnishes too. The important question is not the category but what the stream contains and how consistently the producer can hold it. Ask for the furnish declaration and brightness range before assuming a recycled grade will convert like a virgin one; on many products it will not.
Is a Turkish parent reel cheaper than my current supply?
Not automatically. The route is most competitive where you need a non-standard deckle or furnish, a documented non-Chinese origin, short transit, or interim volume. On standard grades into markets with strong domestic supply, price per tonne may not be the deciding advantage, and we will tell you that.
Can you supply rapid-dissolving toilet tissue parent reels?
These can be evaluated against an agreed disintegration test method and acceptance criteria, using the buyer's own protocol where one exists. Do not accept a description of a grade as rapid-dissolving without the test method and the measured result behind it.
What documentation comes with a shipment?
Typically commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin or A.TR where the customs union treatment applies, and the producer's delivery documentation. Mill test data, chain-of-custody documents and food-contact supporting documentation must be confirmed for the specific grade and site. We do not issue producer documents and will not describe a document as available until it has been seen for the grade in question.
Can you hold an allocation for a repeat programme?
Repeat demand can be recorded and planned, and scheduling is discussed with the producer at feasibility stage. What cannot be promised is guaranteed availability in every period, particularly where a grade depends on one machine. Each delivery is confirmed against the production position at the time.
Request a Tissue Parent Reel Quotation
Send deckle, core diameter, maximum outside diameter, grammage per ply, furnish, required tensile and wet strength, trial quantity and monthly tonnage, plus destination and preferred Incoterm. You will receive a documented position on which grades can be matched and how the shipment would be routed.
